For Students Impacted by Palestine-Israel Events


In alignment with Dalhousie’s Senate-approved equity ethos statement, guiding admission and student service practices, Dal has implemented supports for students displaced or personally affected by crises, including the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine and surrounding regions.

These supports include:

  • Application fee waiver

  • Admission deposit waiver

  • Personalized and trauma-sensitive advising and navigational support on academic options (including English Language upgrading, if applicable), admission requirements, pathways, and related processes – irrespective of level of study

  • Flexible admission requirements for those unable to document their qualifications, including assistance from competent authorities to validate credentials or consideration of individual portfolios as evidence of potential for success

  • Expedited file processing

  • Personalized advising around access to financial supports and/or waivers based on a holistic evaluation of individual circumstances and needs

  • Expedited access to bursary funding outside standard bursary application dates

What is the Code of Student Conduct?

The Code of Student Conduct (the “Code”) is a document that outlines the non-academic behavioural expectations for students and the process for handling infractions of the Code when they arise.

Dalhousie Behavioural Intervention Team

Proactive, early intervention, risk of harm assessment, coordinated support for individual students who cause disruption to the University community. Can assess behaviour and written word.

How to refer concerns to BIT (Dalhousie Behavioural Intervention Team)

What to refer:

  • Disruptive behaviour: Outbursts, swearing, derogatory language, personalized verbal attacks, questioning competence, intimidation” 

  • Difficult behaviour: Repeated contact, demanding action, excessive cc’ing, conflation of issues, refusal to accept answers, hard to disengage, time consuming” 

  • Expressed hardened and fixed thoughts, grievance/injustice collecting, fixations on one person or group, threat leakage (ex., someone tells you, “you may not want to come to class next week”)

Dalhousie’s Ombudsperson | Carla Britten

The Ombudsperson Office recognizes that within Dalhousie there are different levels of power and privilege. The Ombudsperson is committed to educating the community and will endeavour to find ways to work together that recognize and challenge inequalities.

Why should you contact Carla? She can:

  • Provide general resource information and make appropriate referrals 

  • Identify and explain relevant university processes/policies 

  • Work with students to explore and strategize options for problem-solving 

  • Empower students to deal directly and effectively with their concerns 

  • Facilitate discussions and make inquiries for clarification to seek resolution 

  • Give sound and practical advising 

  • Listen and provide an objective perspective.

  • You are not sure where to go or how to get your concern or problem addressed 

  • Are in an appeal process and need help understanding the process
