SUB moves to summer hours as of May 1 |

The Student Union Building (SUB) is home to the Dalhousie Student Union (DSU)’s services, many study spaces, various commercial vendors and University services. Income generated by the DSU’s services and tenants is returned to the student community through DSU projects and services. We also have a satellite office located on Dalhousie’s Sexton campus, Room 2107 of the Richard Murray Design Building.

DSU Sexton Office

Find us in the Design Building, Rm 2107

The DSU Sexton office is a satellite office of the DSU. The DSU recognizes that Sexton campus students have unique needs that this satellite office aims to address.

Office hours are held daily between the Executive Team, the Health Plan Office and commissioners

Services in the SUB

Loaded Ladle

The Loaded Ladle serves free, locally produced meals! Anyone and everyone is welcome to volunteer with us or eat our delicious food. Loaded Ladle is a non-profit, student funded, open cooperative of students and community members dedicated to providing affordable, diverse, fresh, and healthy food to as many people as possible. Loaded Ladle aims to tackle the unjust global food system by providing a local alternative.

Serving Hours

The Ladle Kitchen is open during the fall and winter term! We'll be serving from Tuesday to Friday from 12:30 to 2 pm. Follow us on Instagram for any updates on our serving days!

How to pick up your meal

The Ladle is housed on the first floor of the Student Union Building near the Atrium. Service is first come, first serve. We don't have take-out boxes, so please bring your own Tupperware!

Food Bank

Food insecurity is a problem in the student community. Sometimes money doesn't come in, loans get delayed, or you've got other expenses that suddenly appear. Don't worry - whether you need long term assistance or just a few meals to get by, come visit the Food Bank.

How to use this service

Registration closes by midnight of the previous day. You will not receive a confirmation email so make sure to note which time you have selected.

  • CKDU-FM is Halifax’s only FM campus-community radio station: a volunteer-run, 3200-watt station broadcasting 24/7 from the Dalhousie campus to the metro Halifax area. CKDU has been on the FM dial since 1985. Our mandate is to provide an alternative to private and public broadcasters, and to be a forum for diverse and under-represented voices, music, and news. We're committed to public access to the airwaves, and to supporting marginalized individuals and communities through our projects and programming.

    Our office hours are 9am-4pm, or later by appointment. Drop by or get in touch with one of our staff to make your own show, present us with music, or receive training in audio recording and production.

  • Dalhousie Outdoor Society – Gear Library
    The Dalhousie Outdoors Society (DOS) is a levied society aimed at increasing the accessibility and connectedness of the Dalhousie community to the outdoors through guided trips, grants, and a fully-stocker gear library. The DOS Gear Library, located on the third floor of the SUB (Room 340), offers year-long rentals of camping gear, surfboards, crash pads, snowshoes, and much more! Gear library rentals can span up to two weeks and are free of charge! The Gear Library also provides guidebooks, gear repair supplies, and a cozy spot to plan your next adventure.

    How to use the Gear Library
    Borrowing gear is simple! First, become a DOS member by signing the yearlong waiver (it's free!), create a reservation and pick up your gear during a designated office hour once your reservation has been approved. For more information on membership, gear rentals, updated gear library hours and other services provided by the Dalhousie Outdoors Society, please visit https://www.daloutdoors.com/.

  • The Dalhousie Bookstore is open for in-person shopping. Online shopping, mail outs and in-store pick-up are still available. Please note you should only make an appointment after you have received confirmation that your order has been processed and is ready for pick-up.

  • Info Desk Hours: Monday-Friday (8:30 AM – 5:00PM)
    Closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

    The Info Desk located on the Main Lobby of the SUB operates a wide arrange of services to support our students and ratified societies. This desk is operated by our Member Service Assistants who are eager to welcome you to the DSU. Services offered at the Info Desk include answering general inquiries about the SUB, operating our “Lost and Found”, locker rentals, office key sign-outs, co-managing the Society Hub, pre-screening bank letters, grant, and ratification applications for societies; and much more!

  • As of May 1st 2023, the Member Services Desk will not be operating in the DSU.

    All services previously offered by the Member Services Desk will be offered at the Info Desk in the Main Lobby of the SUB. Student Study Spaces

The Atrium on the SUB’s first floor.

The Atrium | 1st Floor

The Atrium is the SUB’s largest seating area. Located on the main floor, this area is ideal for students looking to study while chatting with friends. Table seating is available as well as sectional couches and chairs for casual gethering.

Society Hub on the SUB’s third floor.

Society Hub | 3rd Floor

An open are that is welcome to be used as a student study area, featuring communal-style tables with built-in outlets, the Society Hub is perfect for solo studying or group work!

The space may be rented out by societies to host their events. As this is primarily a society space, Societies do have first access. If this happens, we ask you to use one of our many other available spaces to study. Either way, you are welcome to come to the Society Hub to learn about everything societies!

Couches & Benches | Floors 1-3

Couches and chairs are located in communal areas on the first, second and third floors of the SUB.


Single-stall gender neutral & accessible washrooms

Basement

A gender-neutral bathroom is located in the basement in the Wellness Room (between side doors and NSPIRG office).

First-Floor

First floor washrooms are located past the information centre and just before the Grawood on the left-hand side.

Third-Floor

Third floor washrooms are located across from the elevators and main staircase down the hallway, the washrooms are the first, and third doors on the right-hand side. There are access controls on both of the doors, though they only open one way. An additional third floor washroom is located past Campus Copy, down the first hallway on the left, and left past the kitchenette.
