Orientation Coordinator

The Dalhousie Student Union is looking for an Orientation Coordinator to work 20 hours a week from May 1 to September 30.  

The Orientation Coordinator will be responsible for the planning, promotion, and execution of the Dalhousie University Orientation Week program run by the Dalhousie Student Union. The Orientation Coordinator position is for student leaders who will dedicate themselves to delivering a supportive, informative, and inspiring program for all new students to Dalhousie University’s Halifax campuses. This position will be directly reporting to the DSU Vice President of Student Life who will also be assisting with Orientation endeavors.

Duties: 

Program development

  • Sit as co-chair on the DSU Orientation Committee to develop the programming DSU O-Week 2014
  • Facilitate regular O-Week Committee meetings throughout the Summer
  • community partners, and all first-year faculties
  • Work collaboratively with all Orientation programs at Dalhousie University (eg. International, Grad Students)
  • Work collaboratively with Residence Life at Dalhousie University
  • Assist in planning and execution of additional events for Orientation (eg. DALFEST, Society Carnival, etc.)
  • Actively engage with O-Week & Handbook Sponsorship Coordinator throughout the Summer leading up to the event

Volunteer management

  • Facilitate regular O-Week Committee meetings throughout the Summer
  • Recruit Orientation Week Leaders over spring/summer semesters
  • Assist in developing Leader information/training sessions for “Leader camp”
  • Maintain contact with Leaders over Summer

Communications

  • Meet regularly with the DSU - VP Student Life
  • Communicate with new students and parents as required (e.g. answering questions, comments, concerns, etc.)
  • Liaise with Sponsorship Coordinator throughout event ensuring sponsors are looked after
  • Manage data regarding Orientation Leaders, volunteers, and new students
  • Assist with publications and communications including orientation mail-outs, e-newsletters, the Create website, Orientation Volunteer training materials, t-shirts, and a variety of other materials Sponsorship
  • Attend regular meetings with full-time staff at the DSU
  • Assist DSU executives and corresponding departments in arranging for O-Week Registration to be set up and accurately and successfully promoted
  • Prepare monthly and end of term report on the position
  • Monthly payment is contingent on receiving O-Week updates each month from Coordinator

Qualifications: 

  • In good academic standing
  • Skills with event planning, coordinating, and marketing
  • Outstanding leadership and organizational skills
  • Flexibility and willingness to work extended days during orientation season
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Critical and creative thinking skills
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team
  • Knowledge of campus and community resources
  • Respect for and enthusiasm about serving a diverse population
  • Interest and experience in program marketing and promotions
  • Excellent computer skills (word processing, email, database management, spreadsheets)
  • Previous experience with DSU and Dalhousie University Orientation Week is a major asset
  • Experience working in an office and maintaining professional working relationships an asset

Honorarium: $5500
